No Time For Real Art

Sat Jun 27, 2009, 9:42 AM
Hello All,

It has been awhile, but since last I wrote back in November a lot has changed. Both with myself and with the world. I worked for 6 weeks at a Shirt Print shop doing graphic design work and art for various clothing items. Then I got a job working as a 3D Designer/Presentation Artist at Jostens. For those of you not familiar with this company, they create a wide variety of High School and College class rings, along with other sports related awards rings. They also created this last years Super Bowl ring for the Steelers. So now most of my time is spent working at Jostens now. I generally work 8 or 9 hour days.. some days have been longer, and some days I end up working five or six hours after I get home from work. So there isn't much time for personal projects these days.. and I'm kind of ok with that. On the weekends I need to get away from computers, so I often will go out hiking.. Too bad I can't hike five days a week and work on the computer for two haha. Over the coming months you'll probably see an increase in my photography.. since it is something I like to do while I'm hiking. I'm by no means a photographer.. I'm just someone that likes capturing the world around me so I have something to look at on my computer when I can't get away.

Hope everyone is well and enjoying the start of what will surely be a hot summer.

~M

haha, but at least I don't let my dislike for mcad cloud my answers. I offer truthful responses about mcad... which truthfully.. shows why it isn't that great of a school hahah.

I don't wanna be a bother, but I had MCAD questions too =/ I'll be attending in the fall. What I'm really worried about is theft. I'm planning on taking my desktop down and my Cintiq tablet. What are the chances I'll get my own room and do you have any ideas on security measures I can take to prevent theft? I really don't wanna leave without my set-up .

No bother at all. Theft has occurred, but you just have to be smart with your expensive equipment. Chances of getting your own room as a Freshman is highly unlikely. I won't say impossible.. but highly doubtful. With freshman they often will put four people in a two bedroom apartment. There are also smaller two bedroom two person apartments which are more secure since there's really only one other person to worry about. Most cases of theft have been because some propped the building security door open and the apartment door happened to not be locked. Always make sure your apartment door is locked. Even if you're going out for a minute. I know I've gone off on campus to do something that was just going to take a "minute" but then turns into a half hour or longer. There are some devices out there you can buy for your desktop to tether them to a table. Unless it is the best computer in the world.. I wouldn't worry about that so much. A lot of students have desktops so chances are they won't want yours too haha. Plus all freshman are given Macbooks so again, chances are students won't want yours. As for the Cintiq.. I'm not sure what the best securing method would be for that... In a large briefcase hidden away? haha Not sure. Honestly I think the best securing method is to just make sure your door is locked and don't leave your stuff lying around in the open. Too many times I've walked around on campus and see people have left their macbooks on the lawn by the school. That's just asking for trouble I say. So yeah, just be safe and smart and everything will be fine. I had two other roommates my sophomore year there and they never took anything from me computer wise. I hope you enjoy MCAD! It was a fun time.

thanks so much for all the information, lol I just got back from a trip from visiting Minneapolis and it's definitely going to be a huge change from Alaska. I'm excited because from what I've seen I love MCAD, but I'm not sure I love Minneapolis. I guess I'll see when I'm living there =) Thanks again though.

hey i was wondering if I could ask you some questions about mcad! um, are you in any way familiar with the graphic design department of the school?

--
if love is the answer, can you rephrase the question?
:iconorganboy:
Hey! I wish I could give you some good info on the Graphic Design department, but I'm pretty much just a media person. I know MCAD is known for their Graphic Design, but I wouldn't be the best person to talk to about it. I can answer general questions though if there's anything you'd like to know about the school and campus life.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

yess there are! tell me everything about mcad :) especially the things you don't like, I'm sick of people going "omg it's so good". well yeah but not every college is 100% perfect ya know? yeah also what is media anyway...like product design? advertising?

:iconorganboy:
Media is Animation, Interactive, Film/Video, and Photography. So let's see.. where to begin. Well MCAD is a fairly small school and is currently at max. capacity for students, so it's starting to get a bit cramped, but it's not too bad. All Freshman and Sophomores are eligible for on campus housing. The dorms are fairly decent. Most colleges give you a box for a dorm, but MCAD's are more apartment like. The trouble with dorms is that they try to put a bunch of kids together in the dorms and there's always going to be people you won't like. Normal housing situations for dorms freshman year are 2 bedrooms with four people or 2 bedrooms three people. There are some lucky who get two bedroom two people. The latter of the three is what I'd consider the best. Then at the end of sophomore year, they hold a housing lottery, basically picking names out of a hat, and then you get to see if you get to stay on campus for your Junior year.

Then there's a cafeteria called the MCAD Bistro (we all call it Nora's). They have a variety of food, but is generally not the healthiest place around.

We have four computer labs and computers randomly placed in rooms throughout the college and in the Library. Sometimes it can be hard to find a free computer (due to over crowding) but it's not a huge issue since all freshman are given laptops (you pay for them through tuition) with all the software on them. Some times the servers act up and computers do terrible things, but this has been improving.

Most people fall in love with MCAD, but that'll fade away and things will become fairly normal, which is a good thing. You just kinda know everyone and are really comfortable. There will always be people that'll drive you crazy, but that's anywhere you go. And you'll definitely run into the person that is only at art school because they think they can make money off of it and really don't care about art at all.

That's it in a nutshell. Around MCAD is the Art Institute and the Children's Theatre and about two blocks away you can catch a bus that goes downtown.

Hope this has been helpful!
